How I Work
I run Ellis Briggs as a one-person workshop, specialising in the restoration, respraying, and custom building of high-quality steel bicycle frames. My work combines traditional craftsmanship with a deep appreciation for classic frames, ensuring each project receives the time and attention it deserves.
A Craftsmanship-Driven Business Model
My business isn’t just about resprays—it’s about keeping the craft of steel framebuilding alive. To do that, I split my time across several key areas:
- Frame Restorations & Resprays – The core of my business, where I restore classic frames to their former glory, handling everything from repairs to custom paintwork.
- Custom Framebuilding – I build bespoke steel frames for customers who want a new bike tailored specifically to them.
- Framebuilding Courses – I teach others how to build their own steel frames, helping to pass on the knowledge and skills that keep this craft alive.
- Customer Support & Sales – From answering enquiries to helping customers choose the right finish for their frame, I dedicate time to ensuring every project gets the attention it needs.
Each of these elements is vital—not just to me, but to my customers. The skills I refine through custom framebuilding improve my restoration work. Teaching courses allows me to share my knowledge and inspire new builders, ensuring the craft continues. And sales help keep the business sustainable so I can continue working on frames for years to come.
Balancing Work & Lead Times
Because I manage every part of the process myself, my availability shifts throughout the year. There are times when I’m fully focused on resprays and restoration, and others where I am running framebuilding courses or completing custom builds. This means my response times and availability can vary, but I always strive to provide clear communication and realistic lead times.
If you’re waiting for an update on a frame, know that while I might be occupied with another aspect of the business at any given moment, it all feeds back into ensuring every frame I work on is done to the highest possible standard.
Why This Matters
The way I work isn’t just about managing my time—it’s about preserving and continuing a craft that has been central to cycling for over a century. By supporting my work, you’re not just getting a respray or a frame; you’re helping keep steel framebuilding alive and ensuring that these skills don’t disappear.
I appreciate every customer who trusts me with their frame, and I do my best to ensure that trust is rewarded with exceptional craftsmanship.
